Breastfeeding is so important for both you and your baby–it’s a journey you’re both on, and here at Cincinnati Breastfeeding Center, we help you achieve your feeding goals while finding joy in the process. For our little ones, breastfeeding provides custom nutrition that adapts with each feed, giving them exactly what they need. It even helps them sleep better at night due to increased melatonin in the breast milk. For you, it can also promote relaxation and reduce your stress levels. It can be one of the most fulfilling experiences, but it often requires guidance. Breastfeeding is natural, but it doesn’t always come naturally, often leaving you confused and exhausted. That’s where we come in. We help ease the overwhelm that comes with managing it on your own. At CBC we help you navigate all aspects of feeding your little one: breastfeeding, bottles, pumping, and more. We create a sustainable plan for you so you reach your breastfeeding goals. What this means to you is you will feel fully supported with our education, guidance, and personalized approach. The real value is you will spend time focusing on snuggling your newborn and healing postpartum. Whether you’re expecting, a new mom, or have been breastfeeding for a while, Cincinnati Breastfeeding Center is here to support you and your baby through prenatal, breastfeeding, pumping and even bottle feeding consultations. Our goal is to provide individualized personal care with you in mind.

Common Breastfeeding Challenges

Whether you’re experiencing low supply, latching pain, tongue or lip ties, returning to work, engorgement, fussy baby, food sensitivities, nipple pain, slow weight gain, or anything else… we’re here to make your journey easier so you can enjoy more moments with your baby. In fact, we had a mom who came to us heartbroken about her inability to exclusively breastfeed, as they were primarily bottle feeding with formula. We worked hard on improving her supply, addressing postpartum mental health issues, and creating a sustainable plan. At around 11 weeks old, the mom was excited to share that they were primarily breastfeeding! Her baby was satisfied, happy, and gaining weight well, which was exactly what they had hoped for. She was thrilled to be able to feed her baby on the go without worrying about bringing enough formula or breastmilk or finding time to pump. She was able to enjoy her baby without feeling overwhelmed or burnt out. Actually enjoying your baby is what you want isn’t it? We genuinely listen to you to ensure you achieve your personal goals, starting from feeding your baby and extending beyond. It's not just about mastering breastfeeding; it's about enjoying life more without the stress and anxiety of wondering if you're doing things right or doing enough. Book a breastfeeding support appointment with us today so we can help you find joy again.

Quick Tips for Breastfeeding Your Baby

  1. Make sure your baby latches on comfortably—think big mouth, wide latch!
  2. Try out different breastfeeding positions until you find the comfiest one for you both.
  3. Keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day to stay hydrated.
  4. Keep your nipples clean and dry, and give them some air between feedings.
  5. Feed your baby whenever they seem hungry, rather than sticking to a strict schedule.
  6. Cluster feeding is 100% normal. It is not indicative of your supply.
  7. Nourish yourself with a variety of healthy foods to keep your energy levels up.
  8. Give gentle breast compression while nursing to help milk flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What can I expect during a lactation consultation?

Lactation visits last 60-90 minutes and include a comprehensive review of your health history. We address all your questions and concerns. During the visit, we conduct a full feeding assessment while you breastfeed, including a weighted feed, and perform an oral assessment at the end to evaluate function. You’ll leave with an individualized care plan tailored to your specific needs.

  • How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

Here are some signs to look for:

    • Watching your baby during a feed is the most important tool for evaluation. Do you see the jaw moving in a downward motion? Do you notice the ear wiggling and movement up by the temple? You should also be able to hear swallows.
    • Tracking wet and dirty diapers is a great way to gauge if your baby is getting enough milk.
    • Are they satisfied after breastfeeding or always wanting to eat? Or, do they fall asleep immediately at the breast? These are signs that you might want to seek out care.
    • Weight checks with the pediatrician or in our office are another effective way to monitor intake.
    • During lactation consults, we perform a weighted feed to help you understand how much milk your baby transfers from the breast in one feed. This is just one valuable metric we use.
    • Notice if your baby relaxes and seems more content after feeding.
  • What should I do if breastfeeding is painful?

Breastfeeding shouldn’t be painful! If you're experiencing pain while breastfeeding, it's important to seek care from a skilled lactation provider like an IBCLC. They can help identify the root cause of your discomfort. Often, pain is due to how the baby is latched at the breast. If the latch seems correct but it's still painful, a deeper assessment of your baby's mouth may be needed. Sometimes, oral ties can contribute to significant pain and damage during feeding.

  • How often should I breastfeed my newborn?

Most breastfed babies thrive on being fed on demand, especially during the early newborn days. It's crucial to feed your baby at least every 3 hours or wake them to eat until they regain their birth weight. Once they reach their birth weight, you can follow their cues for feeding times. Typically, breastfed babies will eat 8-10 times a day throughout their breastfeeding journey, though feeding sessions will become more efficient and shorter as they grow older. During periods of cluster feeding or growth spurts, your baby might eat more frequently, which is completely normal.

  • What are some tips for getting a good latch?

For a good latch while breastfeeding, make sure your baby's mouth covers both the nipple and a significant portion of the areola, aiming for a deep latch that minimizes discomfort. Position your baby's nose level with your nipple, and gently touch their upper lip to encourage a wide-open mouth before bringing them to the breast.

  • How can I increase my milk supply?

If you're struggling to make enough milk for your baby, there are several strategies to help increase your supply. The best first step is to see an IBCLC lactation consultant who can perform a full assessment and review your medical history to identify the root cause of the low supply.

Before your consult, ensure you are removing milk at least 8 times a day through direct breastfeeding or pumping. If your baby is very sleepy at the breast or if you are providing supplementation, it's important to pump after each breastfeeding session. If you're already doing this, then it's time for a consult!

  • Can I still breastfeed if I return to work?

Absolutely! Many moms successfully navigate returning to work while continuing to pump and breastfeed. It's important to discuss accommodations with your employer or HR and have a plan for your pumping times and schedule. Still have questions? We offer return-to-work consults to help you prepare.

  • What breastfeeding support is available if I experience breastfeeding challenges?

We’re here for you every step of the way—from prenatal consults to initial visits and follow-up care—to ensure you feel fully supported in reaching your breastfeeding goals.
