Frequently Asked Questions

  • What can I expect from my first lactation support appointment?

During your first appointment, we will conduct a thorough assessment of you and your baby. This includes discussing your medical history, birth experience, and any specific concerns you may have. We will observe a feeding session to evaluate latch and positioning, and provide hands-on assistance as needed. Our goal is to address your questions, offer personalized recommendations, and create a tailored plan to help you meet your breastfeeding goals.

  • What is covered in a prenatal lactation care appointment?

A prenatal lactation care appointment focuses on ensuring a positive breastfeed experience and making sure you have the resources to reach out to if needed once your baby arrives. We will discuss your breastfeeding goals, potential challenges, and strategies for success. Topics covered include pumping, bottle feeding, and when you might need more support. You will leave the visit feeling confident in navigating feeding your baby in the first week of life and beyond.

  • What kind of support do I get from a breastfeeding support session?

In a breastfeeding support session, you receive personalized guidance to address any breastfeeding challenges you may be facing. This includes help with latch and positioning, managing milk supply, dealing with nipple pain, pumping, bottle feeding, tongue/lip ties, bottle refusal, back-to-work, introduction of solids and weaning, and addressing any concerns about your baby’s feeding patterns. We offer practical advice, emotional support, and evidence-based solutions to help you achieve your breastfeeding goals.

  • What is a breast pump fitting session like?

A breast pump fitting session involves selecting the right pump for your needs and ensuring proper fit and usage. We will demonstrate how to use the pump, discuss settings and maintenance, and provide tips for maximizing milk production. Proper flange size and fit are important for comfort and efficiency, and we will work with you to find the best options. We will create a sustainable pumping plan if needed during the visit as well.

  • How do I know if I need breastfeeding support?

You might need breastfeeding support if you experience pain during feeding, concerns about milk supply, difficulty with baby’s latch, tongue/ lip tie, oral function, poor weight gain, or bottle feeding challenges. If you feel overwhelmed or unsure about your breastfeeding journey, seeking support can provide reassurance and practical solutions. Trust your instincts—if you feel something isn’t right, reaching out to an IBCLC is a good idea.
